Geethika – Yard Long Bean cultivation
Sri Purushothaman, a progressive farmer in Perumpetty participated in the Front Line Demonstration of cultivation of Yardlong bean variety Geethika under plastic mulching and
20:30:10kg/ha NPK fertiliser dose during 2017-18. Before venturing into cultivation, he attended the training programme on Yardlong Bean cultivation organised by KVK. The demonstration was done in an area of 0.04ha. At the time of preparation of planting beds, FYM@20t/ha was applied, and the beds were covered with a silver-black plastic mulching sheet. Seeds of Geethika variety released for Kerala Agricultural University were sown at a distance of 45cm in beds prepared at 2m spacing. NPK fertiliser was applied at 15 DAS, 35 DAS and 55 DAS. The crop started flowering at 32 DAS, and he obtained a total yield of 14.6 Qt from the plot. He sold the produce in the local market at an attractive price of Rs 50/kg and obtained a total income of Rs 80,600. He was very happy and affirmed that he will continue using the technology in future.
